WINES & ACCOLADES

Memorable wines are born in unique birthplaces and often made in small lots. This is my mission: to bring together historic clones and unique, low-yielding vineyards in the cool micro-climates of the Sonoma Coast and Los Carneros, and handcraft elegant, delicious and food-oriented Chablis and Burgundy-inspired wines for a rewarding experience. I am delighted to presently offer two exquisite, Sangiacomo vineyard-designate Chardonnays from the heart of the Carneros. It is a privilege to call the Sangiacomo Family my friends and sources of ultra-premium fruit for both my 2016 releases. Through such partnerships, I look forward to introducing other world-class vineyards to friends and supporters.

2014 Chardonnay

Sangiacomo Green Acres Hills Vineyard, 100% Old Wente Clone, Los Carneros 120 Cases

Planted in 1969 to just 5 acres of the prized Old Wente Clone [a rare, noble Chardonnay from Meurseault], Green Acres Hills Vineyard is hallowed ground for Chardonnay in Sonoma Carneros. In the summer, blue-grey fingers of Pacific Ocean fog descend over the hills, lingering well into late morning the next day while afternoon Bay breezes provide a cooling encore - all helping fruit ripen slowly to produce an aromatic, intensely concentrated Chardonnay with a compelling acid backbone. Harvested by night and made using gentle Burgundian methods to preserve clonal character, our Old Wente Chardonnay delivers an exhilarating bouquet of white flowers and wet stone, followed by layers of green apple, pear, orange zest, lemon curd and ginger on the palate – finishing long with an exquisite minerality that is unmistakably Sonoma Carneros. While an expanded Green Acres remains a bastion of Sonoma Chardonnay, the revered Old Wente vines from the original 1969 block sadly lost a long and hard-fought battle against a virus in 2015. Oceans Churning 2014 Old Wente Chardonnay is an elegant, Chablis-inspired swan song for this rare piece of California’s viticultutral history.

2014 Chardonnay

Sangiacomo El Novillero Vineyard, 100% Heritage Clone 4, Los Carneros 93 Cases

Only a mile south of Sangiacomo Green Acres Hills and cooled by Bay breezes blowing gently all day in the growing season, the spectacular El Novillero Vineyard sits on the historic Donnell Ranch. Planted to Heritage Clone 4 [a direct descendant of the illustrious Old Wente], El Novillero’s marine sediment and rock-strewn shallow soil allowed me to produce an opulent Chardonnay with a complex, Chablis-recalling structure that is yet rooted in its Sonoma Carneros terroir. Harvested by night and made gently in the Burgundian tradition, our El Novillero Chardonnay opens with a voluptuous tropical aroma, leading to a silken texture and layers of luscious stone fruit, citrus, almonds and hints of custard, brioche and coconut on the palate – all wonderfully balanced by a lively acidity for a long finish and memorable experience.
